PAINTED IN 1894, JUST A YEAR BEFORE MORISOT'S DEATH, LA FALAISE AU PORTRIEUX EXEMPLIFIES THE ARTIST'S LATE STYLE. DRAWING BECAME INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT TO MORISOT IN THE LATE 1880'S, AND BY 1887 SHE WAS USING PASTEL, WATERCOLOUR, CHARCOAL, RED CHALK AND COLOURED PENCIL TO MAKE PREPARATORY SKETCHES FOR HER PAINTINGS. THERE EXIST TWO STUDIES FOR THE PRESENT WORK. THE FIRST, IN WATERCOLOUR, IS NO. 831 IN M. L. BATAILLE AND G. WILDENSTEIN'S CATALOGUE RAISONNé (OP. CIT., PARIS, 1961, ILLUSTRATED FIG. 805). THE SECOND, A SMALLER PENCIL WORK, IS MENTIONED IN THE CATALOGUE ENTRY FOR THE PRESENT WORK (OP. CIT., PARIS, 1961, NO. 378). THE SMOOTH CONTOURS OF THE PRESENT PICTURE STAND IN MARKED CONTRAST TO THE FRENZIED BRUSHWORK OF EARLIER PAINTINGS, CLEARLY ILLUSTRATING THE RESULTS OF THESE NEW WORKING METHODS.
