Return of the coolies of the Djibouti saltworks 'Retour des coolies des salines de Djibouti'

The collecting and the exportation of sea salt was one of the few industries of Djibouti, then the capital of French Somaliland, on the north-east coast of the Horn of Africa. The salt came principally from Lake Assal, a maritime enclave below sea level, isolated during seismic upheavals.
