Lot Essay

The collecting and the exportation of sea salt was one of the few industries of Djibouti, then the capital of French Somaliland, on the north-east coast of the Horn of Africa. The salt came principally from Lake Assal, a maritime enclave below sea level, isolated during seismic upheavals.
