Lot Essay

After an unsuccessful attempt at being employed by the Congo Free State, Hens left on an exploratory journey of the lower reaches of the Congo river at his own expense in 1886. He only managed to go just north of Isangila, in the region of the waterfalls, but was able to make a collection of unknown fish, plants, insects and ethnographical objects. See M. Luwell and H. Verschraegen, Frans Hens 1856-1928. Schilder van Congo, Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren.
