In an unpublished typescript, Randonnée en A.O.F., the artist describes her visit to Bamako in 1938: 'The women's chests swelled out under light muslin (sometimes they are naked, a single loincloth around the waist). Their faces are framed with curved plaits, a bunch of amulets, shells, their ears edged with silver rings'. The names Bidou and Fenta are certainly those of the women in the painting.
