Lot Essay

Most of the women painted during the artist's first journey to the Belgian Congo, in 1951-52, were Luba, many of whom lived in the area around Kamina. The Luba, who practiced circumcision and women's initiation, had, like many other animists, a strong belief in a supreme being and worshipped ancestors and natural spirits.
