Lot Essay

The artist lived in the Belgian Congo from 1939 to 1940, before settling in South Africa. There, he untiringly recreated the country which he had so loved and which had become an idealized abstraction. In his paintings, the heavily-outlined figures, silent and solemn, form rythmetic patterns with their surroundings.
