A DOOR OPENS ONTO THE VELVETY NIGHT, WHERE A PRECISE MOON SIGNS ITS LACEWORK. VIOLENT LEAVES RESTRAIN THEIR BELLS AND TERRIFY THEIR BIRDS.

IN THE MANNER OF ITS COMPOSITION AND IN ITS THEMES, THIS PAINTING IS A VARIATION OF THE FIRST IN THE SERIES. THE CURTAIN AT THE RIGHT OF THIS PAINTING FORMS A BALANCE TO THE CUT-OUT BACKDROP OF THE FIRST WORK AND THE LEAVES WITH THEIR BELLS AND BIRDS ECHO ITS "LEAF-BIRDS". THE CENTRE OF THE PAINTING IS ONCE AGAIN DOMINATED BY THE SIMULTANEOUS APPEARANCE OF DAY AND NIGHT WHERE MAGRITTE HAS THIS TIME USED ANOTHER FAVOURITE DEVICE, THAT OF THE DOOR WHICH OPENS ONTO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WORLD. IN THE USE OF EXOTIC BIRDS PERCHING ON VEINS OF A LEAF THE PRONOUNCED DISTORTION OF SCALE SUGGESTS A MICROSCOPIC MENAGERIE OF LIFE THAT WAS ALSO DEPICTED IN THE 1942 PAINTINGS LE REGARD INTéRIEUR AND LA TROISIèME DIMENSION. THE BELLS EMERSED INTO THE CONTOURS OF THE OTHER LEAF REFER DIRECTLY TO AN IMAGINING THAT MAGRITTE FIRST VOICED IN 1938 WHEN HE DECLARED, "I'D PREFER TO BELIEVE THAT THE IRON BELLS HANGING FROM OUR FINE HORSES' NECKS GREW THERE LIKE POISONOUS PLANTS ON THE EDGE OF PRECIPICES".
