Lot Essay

The West Indies Company, founded in 1621, had at one time the monopoly of the slave trade between Africa and the Spanish colonies. Of its five 'Chambers', Zeeland, the next largest after Amsterdam, contributed two-ninths of the company's capital. The company's functions were transferred to the state in 1791.
