Lot Essay

The painter was born in Lier as the son of the poet of the same name. After his training at the academy of Antwerp he went to Paris in 1878 where he joined the studio of his compatriot Alfred Stevens. Afterwards he enjoyed great success as a painter of interiors, history painting, portraits and landscapes.
