probably French, circa 1880, bearing marks imitating the charge of Henry Clavel 1783-1789, crowned date-letter "P" and a maker's mark with initials "CFT"
Rectangular gold box with canted corners, the lid opening to reveal a brush compartment and three compartments with hinged lids enamelled with love symbols on a salmon-coloured ground and framed by translucent green enamelled leaves, a mirror fixed at the inside of the cover, the base opening with a hinged lid to show the compartment for tobacco or powder, the cover, sides and base enamelled to simulate blue and pink mottled marble, the cover centered by a circular reserve enamelled with putti seated on clouds in monochrome on a salmon-coloured ground, the base similarly painted with an oval reserve depicting two putti at an Altar of Love, the borders chased with scrolls, foliage and husks enamelled in translucent green, blue and red -- 80 mm wide
