Rectangular gold box, the hinged cover, sides and base engraved with engine-turning of quatrefoils and sablé bands of various densities, boldly chased with exotic plants, within borders of reeded wavy stripes, the inside of the cover engraved with the crown of the Prince of Wales with motto "ICH DIEN", the inner flange of the lid engraved with date "20 Jan 1752" -- 64 mm wide

Lot Essay

Paul Robert (1720-1779) was conferred his mastership by the Parisian Guild of Goldsmiths in 1747. Gold boxes by his hand are to be found in the Louvre, the Musée Cognacq-Jay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum and in Waddesdon Manor.
