Lot Essay

According to Catherine Arminjon (et alii, Dictionnaire des poinçons de fabricants d'ouvrages d'or et d'argent Paris 1838-1875, Paris, 1994, p. 36, no. 00131), Adolphe Chadouteau specialised in La tabatière. He struck his mark in 1864 and obviously was the author of a number of Louis XV and Louis XVI revival gold snuff-boxes manufactured during the reign of Emperor Napoléon III.
For another box by his hand, see lot 73.
