Cartouche-shaped box, the lid inset with a boldly carved ivory relief depicting a battle scene, the gold sides stamped with military trophies, the rock-crystal base carved with a couple of eagle-headed sea-monsters and scrolls

Lot Essay

The battle scene on the lid depicts probably a deed of Alexander the Great, after an engraving by Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630).
