Lot Essay

Melchior-Nicolas Moutier, mentioned first in 1736 as an apprentice of Jacques Briand, struck his mark in 1747 and must have died between 1763 and 1764. Works by his hand are of very high quality but rare. Another gold snuff-box by Moutier, of 1754, was sold in these rooms, 17 November 1992, lot 408.
