Rectangular ivory plaque, boldly carved with a portrait of Duke Charles Alexander of Lorraine wearing an ermine-lined cloak, his left hand resting on his helmet, decorated with a sash and the order of the Teutonic Knights, within a floral border embellished with rocaille, the base carved with the Habsburg Double-Eagle devouring a branch of flowers

Lot Essay

Duke Charles Alexander of Lorraine (1712-1780), younger brother of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I Stephen, married Empress Maria Theresia's younger sister Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria in 1744. Until his death, he was governor or the Austrian Netherlands.
