Lot Essay

Although Henry and Sidney Berry-Hill (Antique Gold Boxes, New York, 1953, p. 210) and A. Kenneth Snowman (Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, London, 1966, p. 165) list Claude-Franois Thierry as a maker of gold boxes, his works seem to be very rare. None of the major public collections own works by his hand.
Claude-Franois Thierry was sponsored by Jean-Louis Morel and struck his mark in 1775. He was last recorded in 1793.
