Rectangular box, the cover engraved with three children as musicians, a girl playing the harpsichord, a boy playing the violin and another boy seated on a stool near the girl, within interior background, c-scrolls in the corners of the reeded border, the burnished base and four side panels engraved with c-scrolls and shells enclosing flowers, birds, a squirrel and trees on a matted ground, the inside of the cover engraved with inscription "Given by J. L. Baldwin Esqr. to Henry 8th Duke. 1860"

Lot Essay

The scene on the lid is taken after Carle van Loo's La musique of 1752/1753, painted for the salon de compagnie of Bellevue castle, now in San Francisco, Palace of the Legion of Honour.
Eight boxes by this French silversmith (1709-1789) are illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Dozen om te niezen, Antwerp, Provinciaal Museum Sterckshof - Zilvercentrum, 1996-1997.
