Lot Essay

THE DRAWING BELONGS TO GROUP OF DRAWINGS ASSEMBLED BY THE FLORENTINE PAINTERS SIGISMONDO AND GIOVANNI COCCAPANI. AS MILES CHAPPELL DISCOVERED, THE COLLECTOR'S STAMP SHOWING AN OVAL FRAME SURMOUNTED BY A HELMET AND A SHIELD WITH THE INITIALS GC AND A REARING RAM RELATES TO THE STEMMA OF THE COCCAPANI FAMILY, M. CHAPPELL, 'ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF A COLLECTOR'S MARK (LUGT 2729)', MASTER DRAWINGS, 1983, I, PP. 36-58.
PROFESSOR CHAPPELL RECORDS ABOUT 50 SHEETS FROM THE COCCAPANI COLLECTION, 41 OF WHICH ARE IN THE UFFIZI. MOST OF THE DRAWINGS RELATE TO MAJOR WORKS BY CIGOLI AND HIS CIRCLE, AND ARE FREQUENTLY HIGHLY FINISHED AND SQUARED FOR TRANSFER.
FURTHER DRAWINGS BEARING THE COCCAPANI STAMP WERE SOLD FROM SIR JOHN POPE-HENNESSY'S COLLECTION, CHRISTIE'S NEW YORK, 10 JANUARY 1996, LOT 23 AND FROM THE FERRETTI DI CASTELFERRETTO COLLECTION SOLD IN THESE ROOMS, 2 JULY 1996, LOT 12.
THE MADONNA IN THE PRESENT DRAWING IS REACTING TO THE CHRIST CHILD'S MAKING A CROSS.
