Lot Essay

This and the following two lots were part of a series of 38 drawings of the same subject sold in London before 1945. Another drawing from the same group is illustrated by J. Byam Shaw, op. cit., no. 34.
He pointed out that a sketch of Hercules and Antaeus is drawn under a drawing of a bullock which served for a fresco in the Villa Tiepolo-Duodo in Zianigo near Padua, A. Morassi, Disegni Veneti del Settecento nella collezione Paul Wallraf, exhib. cat., Venice, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, 1959, no. 107. He suggested that the Hercules and Antaeus series was executed at the same time and, because of the similar ledge in the animal series painted for the family villa, was also intended for that decoration.
