This was part of album called Les Liliacées bought by Empress Josephine, wife of Emperor Napoleon I, directly from the artist. The volumes where inherited in 1814 by her son Prince Eugène de Beauharnais who brought them to Germany after the fall of the Emperor. They stayed in the family till 1935.
Redouté had worked for Joséphine from 1798 and was responsible for recording her plant collection. Les Liliacées was one of Redouté's most important works and was published, under the patronage of Empress Joséphine, by the artist.
