Although he did work in marble, Giuseppe Sanmartino is perhaps best known today for his delicately polychromed figures executed in wood and clay. His style, which was highly influential in 18th century Naples, is often difficult to distinguish from works executed by those working in his circle; the present group is extremely close to works by Sanmartino himself, although it is also comparable to works by Giuseppe Picano and Francesco Celebrano (Fittipaldi, loc. cit.).
