A BRONZE GROUP OF THE INFANT BACCHUS RIDING A PANTHER
ITALIAN, LATE 16TH OR 17TH CENTURY
On a later rectangular slate and marble plinth inscribed underneath 'PAIR BELONGED TO THE POET /ROGERS.'; mounted onto a marble plinth.
Uneven blackish brown surface; Bacchus' right hand lacking.
7in. (17.8 cm.) high.

This bronze appears to correspond to one of a pair of bronzes sold in these Rooms on 29 April 1856, as lot 166. This was the second day of an 18 day sale of the 'Very Celebrated Collection of Works of Art, The Property of Samuel Rogers, Esq., Deceased'. The lot was described as 'Cupids on Tigers: a pair of antique bronzes, on plinths' (13 1/2 gns. to Morland).
