Lot Essay
Gamecock was owned by Richard Bullard "who plied a modest trade in stables at Old Catton, just outside the city (Norwich). He was a dealer in horses and in character", (An Artist's Life, p.183) and was later to become Master of the Dunstan Harriers in Norfolk. (The Second Burst, p.181). Over the years he supplied Munnings and his wife with many horses to ride and to paint, and numerous horses obtained from Bullard are illustrated in Munnings' memoirs.
In the early years of his career, Munnings painted friend's horses for ten pounds each and would frequently settle bills in exchange for paintings. Bullard himself was painted by Munnings, depicted on his horse 'Pierre Juan' in 1912.
