Lot Essay

The Savage Club, a Bohemian Gentlemen's Club, was founded in 1857 by Augustus E. Sala and named after Richard Savage the dissolute poet. Housed in various locations, including Aldephi Terrace and the Lansdown Club, it's present home is now at 1, Whitehall Place. Distinguished members of the gregarious club over the years have included Harry Tate, Edward Elgar, Edgar Wallace, Gilbert and Sullivan and Somerset Maughn.
