Lot Essay

The present lot, drawn after a watercolour dated ca. 1895, depicts the artist rewriting the accurately recorded impressions of his journey to Spain and North-Africa in 1894. In Spanje, een reisverslag, which was subsequently published in 1899 and includes a similar sketch of the artist at work, Jozef Israels refers to his unique selfportrait as a writer:'Hier op de tafel, waaraan ik zit te schrijven, ligt een klein boekje, dat ik altijd met een zekere voldoening in handen neem'.
