In this sparsely etched plate, Rembrandt successfully captures the ethereal nature of the risen Christ. The few lines which are used to depict the forms of the figures and the aura which emanates from Christ are intentionally fractured to emphasize the coruscating brilliance of the light. In many impressions on laid paper the shimmering effect is further enhanced by the intentional 'double-printing' often encountered at the left as here. Impressions on warm toned Japanese paper, such as that at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, are usually more precisely printed relying on the colour of the paper for their particular effect.
