Lot Essay

The extraordinary Sheet of Studies with a Woman lying Ill in Bed is one of a small number of plates which the artist treated in the manner of a sketch pad. The personal nature of this study is further emphasized by the inclusion of his ill wife, Saskia. Given their odd compositional arrangement and their spontaneous feel, these 'sketches' cannot have been meant for wide commercial distribution. Fine impressions such as this example are of considerable rarity.
