The later shaped rectangular bevelled plate, within a gadrooned slip, the outer frame with pierced acanthus and foliate scrolls, the cresting surmounted by a basket of fruit and further large scrolling leaves, the apron centred by a mask in a scallop-shell, flanked by C-scrolls and leaves issuing a flowerhead containing the holders for girandoles, now lacking the candle-branches, losses to the carving, re-gilt, with traces of original gilding

Lot Essay

The serpentined acanthus-wrapped frame, enriched with flowers, fruit-basket, satyr-mask and shell-cartouche, is conceived in the George II 'pictureseque' manner.
