Lot Essay

The clock-face is displayed within a kiosk or pavillon chinois standing on a rocky mound within a dragon-borne plinth, and relates to the exotic buildings of the 'jardin anglo-franco-chinois' illustrated in George Louis Le Rouge's, Details des nouveaux jardins à la mode, 1774-89.

An almost identical clock was offered anonymously, Sotheby's London, 3 December 1997, lot 209.
