The Egyptian herm became popular ornament for French furniture in the later 1790s, and related sphynx-herm chairs with Grecian-scrolled backs were supplied in 1802 for Saint Cloud Palace by Georges (II) Jacob and Franois-Honoré-Georges Jacob, of rue Meslée (Musée national des château de Malmaison, Malmaison et l'Egypte, April-July 1998, p. 92, fig. 112). The French-fashion brass inlay of this chair displays an Isis star, which became a popular Egyptian element for English furniture following the publication of Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807.
