Lot Essay

The reed-enriched pedestals, with Etruscan-scrolled 'claws', are of Grecian-lyre form with spindle 'strings' and lozenge-enriched bars. The pedestal pattern, including the palm-wrapped castor-sockets, features in Gillows of London and Lancaster's 1818 Estimate Sketch Book (nos. 2079 and 2084) and is illustrated in G. Wills, Craftsmen and Cabinet-makers of Classic English Furniture, Edinburgh, 1974, pp. 117-8 and figs. 108 and 109.
A writing-table with similar end-supports was sold by Julian Byng, Esq., in these Rooms, 8 July 1993, lot 63.
