Lot Essay
The table's frame, with scrolled brackets and rounded column-cornered legs relates to Thomas Chippendale's 'sideboard table' patterns of 1753 issued in The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, 1754; while its fluted frieze, enriched with sunflowered patterae, reflects the George III antique fashion introduced around 1760 by architects such as Robert Adam (d. 1792) and later illustrated in W. Thomas' design for a 'Sideboard Table' in Original Designs in Architecture, 1783, pl. XXVII (illustrated in E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1990, p. 281).
A secretaire-cabinet which belonged to the Delmé-Radcliffe family of Hitchin Priory, Hertfordshire, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 11 April 1985, lot 162. It is illustrated in R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol. I, p. 194, fig. 59.
