A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT BOOKCASE
The moulded cushion cornice above a pair of Gothic-arched and spandrel- glazed doors, enclosing six shelves and flanked by foliate-capital cluster columns, the outer doors conformingly glazed, each enclosing three shelves, the lower section with eared, reeded top above a pair of panelled doors with cut corners and applied acanthus leaves, one enclosing three shelves, the other later fitted with two associated drawers, on a moulded rectangular plinth base, the back inscribed in chalk '385 PH'

Lot Essay

The Gothic glazing pattern on this bookcase relates to a design for a 'Gothic Book case Door' in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808, plate 106. A related Gothic bookcase with similar pierced tracery between the arched glazing bars, was sold by Major F.C.F. Parker, Newbiggin Hall, Temple Sowerby, Westmoreland, in these Rooms, 9 October 1969, lot 49 and again anonymously, in these Rooms, 25 May 1972, lot 149.
