Lot Essay

There were a large number of pembroke tables listed at Wentworth Woodhouse in the 1782 inventory. The attribution to Wright and Elwick is based on constructional charcteristics and the distinctive cusped quatrefoil, for which see the introduction to lot 33.
A similar pembroke table with a more serpentine top and an elaborate X-shaped stretcher that may also be later was in the Macquoid collection (R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, III, p. 191, fig. 6).
