Lot Essay

The Gallic horseman was exhibited at the Salon of 1863 in plaster and a year later in bronze. A companion piece, the Roman horseman, was exhibited in 1866 and in the Paris Exhibition Universelle of 1867 they were presented as a pair. See Christopher Payne Animals in Bronze, Woodbridge 1986, p.340 for illustrations of both.
