A 1995 Gibson Les Paul Custom
Serial No. 5 9476, in sunburst finish, with gold-plated metal parts, mahogany body with single cutaway, maple top with f-holes, twenty-two fret bound ebony fingerboard with block inlays, headstock face with split diamond inlay, back of headstock with Gibson custom shop transfer, truss rod cover with Les Paul Custom, two Alnico-style pickups, four rotary controls, selector switch, metal bridge and metal stud tailpiece; and a brown hardshell contour case with pink plush lining and Lee Dickson's handwritten adhesive paper label Gibson F.Hole - Alnicos Les Paul.9476

Eric Clapton said that he used this guitar primarily for writing.

Accoring to Lee Dickson, Gibson wanted to come up with something which would appeal to Eric as he was a Les Paul player. He suggested Alnicos because he was using a number of Gibsons with these pickups. Then Gibson made hollow cavities and f-holes to lighten the body.

Lot Essay

In an interview Clapton recalled how the photo of Freddie King playing a Les Paul on the cover of the album Freddie King Sings The Blues inspired him to purchase a Les Paul. ...I went out after seeeing that cover and scoured the guitar shops and found one. It looks like a Les Paul Standard but it hasn't got a sunburst top. If you check the album cover out, it's the weirdest looking beaten-up Les Paul ever...
In a recent interview with Neville Marten for Guitarist, Lee Dickson said of this guitar "...[Eric] picked it up and messed around with it but I don't think he particularly took to it. It was used, though, and I always thought it would make a great slide guitar..."
