Generally the depiction of figures dressed in regional folk costumes is earlier and rarer than ancient monuments or doves. Many of the mosaics depicting peasants are based on the engravings by Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781-1835) c.f. Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, "The Gilbert Collection, Micromosaics", London, 2000.
