Nine hundred model 1853 carbines were purchased by the New England Emigrant Aid Society to arm various anti-slavery groups in their violent conflict with opposing gangs in Kansas. The carbines were shipped from New England in crates marked 'Bibles' and 'Books'. Of these, three hundred were shipped to Kansas and a further hundred were found with the infamous John Brown at his capture.
