A BÖTTGER BLACK GLAZED SILVER-GILT-MOUNTED RED STONEWARE TEAPOT AND COVER
CIRCA 1710-11
Of campana form with a square-section auricular handle and curved spout, the flat cover with a peg finial, glazed to simulate Oriental lacquer and engraved on both sides with a crowned oval panel flanked by scrolling foliate branches and suspending a drapery swag, the tip of the spout with a silver-gilt covered hinged mount engraved with acanthus leaf ornament and with a scroll thumb-piece, the upper handle terminal with a collar, both mounts joined to a ring around the finial with chains (small loss to silver-gilt thumb-piece, some minor surface scratches)

The engraved decoration is extremely similar to a design for the embellishment of a goblet by Paul Decker and published by C. Weigel, Neues Groteschken-Werk vor Goldschmidt Glasschneider und andere Kunstler inventirt durch Paul Deckers Architectum.

Jahrhunderts in Hamburger Privatbesitz Exhibition Catalogue (Hamburg, 1982), no. 3 for a black glazed and engraved teapot and cover of similar form, and where the author lists other known examples. A similar example was sold by Sotheby's London on 4th June 1974, lot 163, and another, formerly in the List collection (possibly the present lot) was sold by Hans W. Lange, Berlin, on 28-30th March 1939, lot 669.
