Antinous was said to have had a romantic relationship with Emperor Hadrian. He drowned in 130 A.D after falling from a barge in the River Nile. Hadrian honoured him by naming the Egyptian city Antinopolis after him. He is often depicted as Dionysus, the god of wine, who was also considered to be eternally young and beautiful.
