This bronze group of a satyr riding a goat is based on antique prototypes (an example of which was included in Montfaucon's l'Antiquité expliquée of 1719, illustrated in Frankfurt, op. cit., p. 480, fig. 213) and plays on the theme of arcadian abandon. It was a motif that was taken up again by bronze founders of the renaissance; variant examples exist in a number of collections including the Bode Museum in Berlin (ibid., no. 187).
