The compressed body raised on three mamiform legs, with dragon handle and leaping animal spout, the shoulder cast in recessed relief with a band of D-scrolls above an abstract band, the triple-dome cover with brooding bird finial, connected to the handle by a feline link, the bronze patinated with malachite encrustation

Lot Essay

A ying from the Sumitomo Collection, Kyoto, illustrated in Western Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M Sackler Collections, vol. IIB, p. 690, fig.116.10, shares a similar spout, shoulder profile and brooding bird on the cover. Fig. 116.8 illustrates an example from Shanxi Qian Xian Xuele with similar shoulder decoration and three mamiform legs. Compare also the drawing, fig. 116.7 in the Brundage Collection, with an animal spout and mamiform legs. Fig. 116.4 illustrates a final example with comparable shoulder decoration and mamiform legs. All are dated to the late Western Zhou period.

The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. C101x75 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
