It is known that, in 1652, Michel Anguier (1612-1686) created a series of bronze gods and goddesses, among them 'une Amphitrite tranquille' which corresponds with the present composition. The Amphitrite was considered to be the most successful of these figures, and was reproduced in a life-size marble version for the gardens of Versailles, as well as in a variety of other sizes.
