A Central European small gilt-brass quarter-striking and alarm tischuhr
Unsigned, probably German. Late 16th/early 17th Century
With waisted top surmounted by a silvered figure of a courtly gentleman, engraved with foliate scrolls on a hatched ground around portrait roundels, above pierced and engraved gallery, each side centred by a relief roundel of an apostle and with silvered apostle figure to the corners, the detachable side panels with columnar angles and engraved with scrolls and respectively with portrait roundels of a gentleman and a lady, the detachable rear panel engraved with a scene of an angel staying the sword of Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac, the front panel also detachable and engraved with foliate scrolls and confronting male and female portrait roundels, above outswept base raised on later bun feet, with dials for:
The front: twenty-four hour hour ring with outer quarter hour markers and central alarm disc, with blued steel twenty-four hour and minute hands; above twelve hour ring, with blued steel hand
The left side: hour strike disc with twenty-four hour and twelve hour calibration, with moving blued steel twelve hour hand and fixed secondary hand
The right side: quarter strike disc, with blued steel hand
The steel posted frame movement of one day duration, with three spoke wheelwork, triple gut fusees and further going barrel for the alarm, verge and (now) spring balance escapement, with 1-6 calibrated regulation via lever to the rear, with countwheels for hour strike on large bell and quarter strike on smaller bell, the alarm reset by a lever above the front dial and with alarm on/off levers to either side of the case
