Chaplet is thought to have begun his experiments with sang de boeuf glazes in 1884. Although Chaplet experienced difficulties at the outset of his research, by 1889 his technique had reached such high levels of excellence that his exhibition pieces were awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle.
