A CHINESE FAN OF 1898
the leaf painted with two fishermen in a bamboo grove, with ducks flying above, and inscribed in calligraphy with the poem: 'We are earning our life fishing in a small lake with thousands of bamboo shoots. Fishing is difficult. We feel as if we are catching fish in the mountains. Bamboo symbolizes the way towards inner enlightenment and spiritual strength through Buddhism,' with bamboo sticks, the guardsticks carved with pomegranates and calligraphy,--13in. (33cm), 1898
