JIN/YUAN DYNASTY, 13TH-14TH CENTURY
The sides carved through the olive-brown glaze with a broad band divided into two panels, one depicting a lotus plant, the other a ribbon-tied lotus leaf and a lotus with a pod, reserved on grounds of overlapping waves, and separated by two vertical panels carved with inscriptions, all between linear borders

Lot Essay

One of the inscriptions may be read, hua xi ke ge ou, which may be translated as, 'underneath the flowers the travelers are singing in praise'. The other may be read, hai zhong ren xiao yu, and may be translated as, 'a sea of people are joking and smiling'.
