A CONTINENTAL ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX
Russian or Swiss, circa 1820/1830, with badly struck probably Russian marks, later struck with two French post-1893 import marks for gold
Rectangular polished gold box with concave sides, the cover panel centred by a cartouche-shaped polished gold reserve decorated with a flowerspray in colourful translucent champlevé enamel, surrounded by a radiating wavy reeded engine-turned sunburst motif, within a white enamel frame, the polished broad gold border decorated in multi-colour champlevé enamel with trailing foliage and flowers, with incorporated wavy thumbpiece, the sides and borders of base similarly enamelled, the base centred with a panel of radiating wavy engine-turned reeding within a white enamel border
