UNMARKED, 19TH CENTURY, THE COVER IS INSET WITH A DUTCH MEDAL COMMEMORATING THE DEATH OF CROMWELL, 3 SEPTEMBER 1658. THE CREST ENGRAVED ON THE HANDLE IS THAT OF STANLEY.

A Continental silver tankard Unmarked, 19th century, the cover is inset with a Dutch medal commemorating the death of Cromwell, 3 September 1658. The crest engraved on the handle is that of Stanley. Cylindrical on a domed base chased with a band of flowers and foliage on matted ground, the body chased overall with scrolling foliage and two portrait busts, a crest and motto within oval cartouches, on a matted ground, with hinged domed cover chased with flowers and foliage inset with a medal, with baluster thumbpiece and scroll handle engraved with crest and motto 9.1/8in. (23cm.) high 36ozs. (1,132gr.)

Lot Essay

The cover is inset with a Dutch medal commemorating the death of Cromwell, 3 September 1658. Several commemorative medals were struck in the Low Countries for some years after his death.
