INCISED QIANLONG MARK AND CYCLICAL DATE REN CHEN, CORRESPONDING TO 1772, AND OF THE PERIOD

Carved from a thin slab of stone, of irregular outline supported on a narrow flat base, carved on the front with the scene from 'The Red Cliff' by the Song poet Su Shi, a single scholar standing on an immense rocky cliff studded with pine trees at different levels, and looking out at the sea below, the details of the wispy clouds and waves represented by finely incised lines, carved on the front with an inscription in kai shu referring to the carving of Khotan jade and two seals of Qianlong reading bi de and lang run, the reverse sparsely carved with layered rocks and an extensive gilt highlighted text from the second part of the 'The Red Cliff', the stone with a soft, even polish and some opaque whitish inclusions--12 7/8in.
